About This Publication
The Ledger
An independent editorial publication on watches, hotels, and automobiles. We write for people who are either acquiring extraordinary things now, or intend to. We are not a luxury lifestyle aspirational product. We are a reference.
The Ledger was founded on a simple editorial principle: that the people who spend serious money on extraordinary objects deserve serious writing about those objects. The watch press has spent decades writing aspirationally, for readers who cannot yet afford what they are reading about. The hotel press has spent decades reprinting press releases. The automotive press has spent decades reviewing cars at manufacturer-arranged events on closed circuits.
We do not do any of those things. We acquire access through the same channels our readers do — as private individuals with specific interests and a tolerance for cost. Our reviews are not written to maintain press access. They are written to be accurate.
The arithmetic framing — the name, the calculator tools, the acquisition analysis — reflects a conviction that the most useful service we can provide is not enthusiasm but clarity. What does it cost, exactly? What is the process for obtaining it? How long will it take? What should you expect when you arrive?
The Ledger covers three categories: watches, hotels, and automobiles. These are not arbitrary. They are the three categories in which the gap between published information and accurate information is largest, and in which the consequences of poor acquisition decisions are most expensive.
We have chosen not to cover fashion, fine art, jewellery, or yachts — not because these categories are uninteresting, but because we have not yet established the depth of independent expertise in those areas that our standards require.
The calculator tools are a practical expression of the editorial philosophy. Knowing that a Lange Datograph costs $85,000 is information. Knowing that at $2,500 per month in savings you will reach that figure in 34 months — that is useful. We build tools that convert price information into acquisition planning.
Editorial Standard
Independence, above all
No brand, manufacturer, dealer, or property has the ability to review, influence, or approve our editorial content prior to publication. We have not accepted complimentary access in exchange for coverage. We will disclose it prominently if this changes.
The Writing
Accuracy, not enthusiasm
We write about these objects as they are, not as they are marketed to be. A watch with a flawed bracelet clasp is described as having a flawed bracelet clasp. A hotel with outstanding food and indifferent service is described as having outstanding food and indifferent service.
The Tools
Arithmetic, not aspiration
Our calculator tools exist because the most frequently asked question we receive is not 'should I buy this' but 'can I afford to buy this.' The acquisition timeline and allocation odds tools are our answer to that question.
